The Landlord of a London Hotel being used as a House in Multiple Occupancy has been fined £10,000 for breaches in Fire Safety.

The London Hotel was being used as a ‘house in multiple occupation’ (HMO), licensed to house 20 tenants. When inspected it was identified as “fell below acceptable safety standards”. The serious fire safety risk led the Environmental Health Officers to bring a prosecution against the Landlord for putting the lives of the building’s occupants in danger.

This prosecution should serve as a warning to Landlords who don’t meet required standards as they will face legal action to protect the health and safety of tenants.

If you are the Responsible Person for a Hotel or HMO in London or Manchester then you should have a Fire Safety Risk Assessment. The Fire Safety Inspection/Audit should be carried out by an accredited Fire Risk Assessor who will provide a ‘suitable and sufficient’ Fire Safety Risk Assessment.
